Drinking age in Georgia

Georgia has some very liberal laws regarding how minors can drink, without being the age of 21, obviously. For example, minors can drink on non alcohol-selling premises, as long as they have parental consent. They can also drink for religious purposes and medical purposes. Georgia has a long history of doing its own thing, and it’s not going to just roll over and let the feds tell it that 21 has to be the minimum drinking age for all circumstances. There are certain exceptions and occasions where people under the 21 are allowed to drink.

There was no known drinking age before Prohibition in 1919. However, the drinking age was changed to 21 after Prohibition. The drinking age was lowered to 18 in 1972 with the passage of the 26th Amendment. It was raised to 19 in 1980, raised to 20 in 1985, and raised to 21 in 1986. It has remained 21 into the 21st century.

The alcohol laws of the United States have always been volatile. As you can tell, Georgia has changed its minimum drinking age many times over the years. The minimum age for purchase has changed a lot over time. Sometimes, different alcohol categories have different purchase ages, but that was before the passage of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. That changed the whole game, and it made the national minimum drinking age 21, regardless of the type of alcohol, or what the circumstances of buying it were. Sometimes, the purchase age is different from the consumption age, but they’ve generally been the same.

There has been a lot of volatility in the states’ drinking ages since after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. A little bit afterward the ratification of the 21st Amendment, many states set their minimum purchase ages at 21 because that was the age of majority at the time.

A lot of people are pretty mad that the age of majority isn’t the same as the age when people can drink alcoholic beverages. That’s the age when people can vote and go to war, but it’s not the age when people can drink, and something seems a little wrong about that. In other countries, the age when people can start drinking is about 18, but in America, it is up to 21, which doesn’t seem fair to many people.

However, there are people working in the country right now to change the drinking age to 18, to lower it to the age of majority, and make it fair and right for everybody. There are some folks who are alright with the age of 21 being the drinking age, though, and they think it’s a good age to help prevent drunk driving fatalities. A lot of immature, inexperienced drivers used to get in crashes because of drunk driving.

A lot has changed since the passage of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. There are people who are starting to rethink whether it’s right or not that the drinking age be all the way up there at 21 years of age.
