Drinking age in the Dominican Republic
The legal drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18 years old. However, like in most South American countries, it’s not strictly enforced, at least in certain parts. Some anecdotal reports suggest that people as young as 14 to 16 can get away with purchasing and consuming alcohol. A lot of countries in the Caribbean could care less about your age, if you show them that hard cash, or that’s at least what some anecdotal reports suggest. One teenager who had been to the country, who was 16 years old, said that he stayed at an all-inclusive resort, and that he was trashed every single day. Another person said that you can drink in a bar as long as you’re 16 years old and with someone who’s over the age of 18. One person said that they’ll certainly serve you alcohol, even if you’re under the legal age, as long as you’re not behaving like an idiot.
A lot of the all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic make you wear bracelets so that the bartenders can know what age you are. If you have an adult bracelet, and it shows you’re over the age of 18, then bartenders will have no problem serving you. Just have common sense and don’t act like a fool, and you’ll continue to get served and get the alcohol that you need to have a great time in the Dominican Republic. If you’re with your parents and traveling there, you may be able to get the drinks that you want if your parents consent to letting you drink. If you’re over the age of 16 years old, and you’re with a parent and you’re supervised, you’ll be able to drink. Chances are, if you’re 16 years old, and on a resort in the Dominican Republic, then you’re probably with your parents anyway. Just ask them if you can drink, and they might say. Remember, letting kids drink a little when they’re young can help stave off major drinking problems when they get older. Sometimes, parents will let their kids drink when they’re on a vacation, and they won’t let them drink when they get back home. Your parents might let you do it just because you’re all out on a vacation and away from the normal parts of everyday life back at home.
Don’t try to abuse the system if you’re in the Dominican Republic and plan on drinking when you’re underage. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position where you could get robbed. Don’t drink to excess. Drink with the supervision of someone over 18 years of age. The Dominican Republic is a great place to enjoy a wonderful vacation, but you shouldn’t mess it up by trying to party too hard just because the drinking age is a little lower there. Yes, it’s a fun place, and you can start drinking there when you’re 18, but you shouldn’t just abuse the laws to drink to excess.
