Drinking age in Turkey

Every country has a different legal drinking age. That’s just the way it is. Unlike some global proscriptions on certain drugs, there is no such worldwide ban on alcohol. There has never been an attempt at one either. Prohibition was the closest thing in the United States, and that only lasted a short while. Alcohol is a fundamental part of every culture, and it’s a unique part of the lives of people growing up as well. There are usually different ages in each country for the different types of alcohol, so people at young ages can usually start drinking. For example, in Belgium, the legal drinking age is 16 for beer and wine. It’s 18 for spirits.

Sometimes, there are different ages for the purchase, possession, and consumption of alcohol. The laws between the countries are different, and that’s a great thing because each country knows best how to treat its people and its underage citizens. The age at which a person is considered an adult, and the age at which someone is considered capable enough to drink alcohol, are usually the same thing. Turkey has a legal drinking age that’s pretty much the norm around the world.

The legal drinking age in Turkey is 18. The government has been putting forth measures to restrict alcohol steadily in the country, much to the ire of youth, and ordinary folks, everywhere. There are even proposals out there to make zones that are alcohol-free, and there are some bans on selling alcohol with certain kinds of packaging too. There are bans on sales, sports advertising, and selling alcohol at public events in some place. Alcohol is still available though, and the legal age is hardly ever enforced in convenience stores or bars. Much like some tourist destinations where they don’t concern themselves with the drinking age for purchasing, possessing, and drinking alcohol, Turkey is kind of lenient in that regard too. At least, they’re not like some Middle Eastern countries, that have banned alcohol altogether.

Turkey has an incredibly diverse culture, and they have some of the most tasty cuisine in the Middle East. Turkey is a very modern nation now, with a strong separation of church and state. There is also a massive amount of art being created, a kind of renaissance, because of the separation of church and state there. During the initial years of the republic, the government invested a ton of money into the arts, architecture, and opera houses. Turkey is like a modern Western nation in a way, and it’s a beautiful place to go on a tourist trip. You’ll have a great time if you’re an adolescent over the age of 18 years old, because you’re allowed to drink there at that age. Plus, you’ll get a tantalizing selection of beverages from the Middle East. You’ll get a fine selection o f European liqueurs too, because of the nearness in proximity and culture to Europe. It’s a great mixture if you’re looking for an excellent time your first go-around.
